Fri, 12/30/2011 - 07:55 — Anonymous Show map at bottom of page A trio of
dancers moves provocatively on a small stage as the dry-ice smoke swirls
around them, their lithe frames clothed in outfits last seen on Jane Fonda in
the 1968 cult classic, "Barbarella." Sometimes their faces wear playful
smiles. Other times, it's a pout. The default, though, is the mouth-agape
pose, the look designed to express ecstasy and eroticism, but which screams,
"I practice this at home in front of a mirror." This isn't a strip
club. It's the BlackList party, Tokyo's sexy, members-only, once-a-month
naughty night out, brainchild of two French expats who just wanted to create
a fun evening for friends. read more

read

Best wonton noodles in Hong Kong

Kong wonton noodle is a simple dish: dumplings are made with several shrimp

in flavor and texture. Whether its plumper shrimps, more al dente noodles or
an extra fragrant broth. Be prepared to have to wait for a table at most
popular places, especially during lunchtime. But with the Hong Kong-style
lunch culture of sit-down-eat-pay-leave-immediately, that steaming bowl of

Xixi National Wetland Park: Hangzhou's hidden beauty
Tue, 12/20/2011 - 04:57 — Anonymous Serenity and peace in bustling
Hangzhou? You can find it in Xixi, along with great views and a unique dining
experience If West Lake is the famed beauty of Hangzhou, Xixi National
Wetland Park (西溪国家湿地公园) is its young maiden still hidden at
home, not yet discovered by the world. Literally meaning "west waterway,"
Xixi is a lush wetland that covers about 10 square kilometers, of which
three-and-a-half square kilometers are open to the public as a park. With
more than 70 percent of the area being covered by water, Xixi National
Wetland Park truly deserves its nickname, "wetland paradise." Once populated
by fishmen and farmers, the wetland dates back 1,800 years to the Han

second person I meet protests that we have no real art scene and pronounces
the city barren of creativity. But, come on. In recent years, the Hong Kong

devoted to new media and subculture art have cropped up. A slew of

Top Tokyo spots for Christmas dinner
Mon, 12/19/2011 - 04:55 — Anonymous Ask any random nipper from the West and
they'll tell you with bells on that Christmas is a family time -- shift the
question to Japan and they'll have a much harder time pinning it down.
That's because the festive season in Asia is, almost exclusively, one of
romance, dating and being together with a significant other. Being single on
Christmas Eve -- the peak of the amorous vacation -- is about as desirable as
pouring o-cha from a chocolate teapot. Naturally, the highlight of any
romantic Yule is a carefully chosen (often, booked months in advance)

Mon, 12/19/2011 - 04:00 — Anonymous
read

Old Delhi's best eats: 10 tasters under US$10
Mon, 12/19/2011 - 05:00 — Anonymous The streets of old Delhi are a
maelstrom of activity, and one of the most important narratives is the one
concerning food. I've walked these lanes with my friends from the nearby

the Shakespeare Society from their most trusted vendor. I've walked these
by-lanes with my grandmother who insisted the best jalebi was on a particular
corner, and with my grandfather who insisted the best chai was on another.
When I re-visit it this time I have a mission to dispel and to reaffirm -- in
the steam of the best chai and the oil of the best puris -- the traditional
eating advice for old Delhi. Travel guides are so dusty on the subject you

Fri, 12/16/2011 - 05:00 — Anonymous

Worst Bollywood movies of 2011
Thu, 12/15/2011 - 11:00 — Anonymous 2011 will go down as an eventful year
as far as Bollywood was concerned. We've seen all sorts of records being
broken. These include Salman Khan releasing two movies that shattered
all-time opening week box-office numbers. "Ra.One" establishing itself as the
most expensive Bollywood movie ever made, and Shahrukh Khan conducting the
world's most elaborate Pavlovian Experiment, where you now want to slap him
every time you see an ad for one of the gazillion products he endorsed this
year in an effort to promote this movie. And of course, amidst all this
awesomeness, was a bunch of movies that never deserved to see the light of

no-no. This is the country that put American Michael Fay and Swiss national
Oliver Frick away for their spray painting antics. But Cyril Phan -- better
known by his street tag, Kongo -- has managed to steer clear of the Singapore
police despite tagging a giant piece of graffiti on Hermès' new Scotts

Where to quench your after-hours thirst in Bangkok

In living color: Tsukiji fish market in action
Thu, 12/15/2011 - 04:55 — Anonymous The world's best-known seafood market
is the jewel in Tokyo's tourist crown Andrew Pothecary Tsukiji market, on
the often-neglected Tokyo waterfront, is the largest wholesale fish market in
the world, as well as one of the busiest -- and most visited -- food markets
anywhere. The main part of the market is open to visitors from 9 a.m.,
leaving the earlier, hectic trading period solely to the professionals the
market caters for -- apart, that is, from a handful of public observer spots
that are usually snapped up before the sun rises. Whatever time you go, keep
an eye out to avoid the many electric delivery carts and, as the signs on the
market walls warn, don't go when you have a cold, don't wear sandals and

Thu, 12/15/2011 - 05:00 — Anonymous
车里有三四个禁烟标志,他却视而不见;
read

‘Airport of the future’ to make flying fun again

Barbie suites, chocolate exhibitions and crazy parties: Happy holidays at Seoul hotels
Wed, 12/14/2011 - 11:58 — Anonymous As Seoulites, we are forced to admit
that we don't really have an authentic Christmas tradition. Most of it is
borrowed, and much of it is, frankly and unashamedly, capitalist sales
mongering. Festoon that department store all you want with glittering
Christmas lights and twee nativity scenes. It's still a house of
shopping. But tradition or no tradition, Seoul's hotels are nonetheless
great at building a mood, and the holiday season is admittedly a good excuse
to pamper yourself at a hotel with one of their packages, parties, or other
promotional deals. read more

Wed, 12/14/2011 - 05:00 — Anonymous
read more

Trapped in Shangri-La: Seven days of (mis)adventure
Wed, 12/14/2011 - 05:00 — Anonymous Our drive starts out calmly enough. The
plan is to rent a SUV from the scenic town of Zhongdian -- also called
Shangri-La -- in northern Yunnan province, China, with a local driver for
three days to circumnavigate the majestic Meili Snow Mountain range. After
that we would head over to the Tibetan-Yunnan border town of Deqin before
bearing south and ending our trip in the hyper-commercialized ancient town of
Lijiang. But like most adventurous trips, almost nothing went to plan -- we
veered far off our anticipated route. And our trip was all the better for

Samantha Leese: Air travel needs to get its groove back
Tue, 12/13/2011 - 23:00 — Anonymous A flight that will take me from Hong
Kong to London in an hour cannot be invented soon enough. Richard Branson

it would probably take many years before his company could offer such a
service. I love to go places, but I find the whole process of traveling by
air so tedious and degrading that I just want to get it over with. It is no

2011 safest year for air travel since 1945
Tue, 12/13/2011 - 11:33 — Anonymous The first 11 months of 2011 was the

Japanese island overrun by rabbits, tourists
Tue, 12/13/2011 - 04:55 — Anonymous Okunoshima, a small island floating in
the Inland Sea between Hiroshima and Shikoku, used to be a top-secret

think to spend an idyllic afternoon. Of course, that was before the rabbits
took over. In 1971, a group of schoolchildren released eight rabbits on the
island. The rabbits did what rabbits do best and now the 700-square-meter
island is home to more than 300 of their floppy-eared descendants, earning it
the nickname Usagi Shima, or Rabbit Island.read more

read

Hong Kong hot pot: Gourmet gimmicks we can't resist
Mon, 12/12/2011 - 05:00 — Anonymous Hot pot -- diners sit around a bubbling
pot of communal broth and dunk raw pieces of food. Once the morsels are
cooked they are slathered in various sauces and eaten immediately. Hot pot is
the Chinese socio-gastro activity of choice. It is a low-maintenance meal
that feeds a lot of people. Having to cook each piece of food individually
before we can eat it turns hot pot into the slowest of slow food meals.
Cooking time becomes bonding time. Besides, in the winter the steaming
cooking pot doubles as a room heater. Where there's demand, there is crazy
competition. Hong Kong hot pot restaurateurs try to out do each other with
wackier combinations of broth-plus-meat each year.read more

Living on Rs 32 a day in India
Mon, 12/12/2011 - 05:00 — Anonymous Many visitors find the cost of living
in India inexpensive -- whether they are shopping, dining or putting up in a
guesthouse. But for millions of Indians, getting by on a pittance is a daily
reality. Recently the Indian Planning Commission recommended resetting the
country's poverty line at Rs 32 a day -- about US$0.60 -- in cities, and Rs
26 in rural areas. If this does not already strike you as outrageous,
think for a minute of all the things we flippantly spend that amount on. A
short rickshaw ride, a 6 p.m. street food snack ... Stumped? So are many.read

Thailand calls in 'Dancing Matt' to promote tourism
Fri, 12/09/2011 - 11:46 — Anonymous Thai tourism officials are bringing in
YouTube hit-maker Matthew Harding to shake his thing in a bid to help the
country get back on its feet after the recent flood crisis. Better known to
his millions of viewers as "Dancing Matt," his visit is part of the Tourism
Authority of Thailand's (TAT) latest campaign, "Go Thailand: All that is
missing is you." Harding's viral videos can be seen on his blog, "Where
the Hell is Matt?" Basically, Harding travels around the world and videos
himself dancing a jig on the spot in center frame while wearing a big, happy
grin. He then edits the short clips to create an admittedly heartwarming but

Fri, 12/09/2011 - 04:55 — Anonymous Seoul is a city for couples. Everyone

Needless to say, it can be hard to stand out. When you finally manage to get

An eating tour of Bangkok's Thanon Dinsor
Thu, 12/08/2011 - 09:57 — Anonymous Running from the Democracy Monument to
Sao Ching Cha, linking shady trees and passing by Bangkok's imposing City
Hall, Thanon Dinsor -- or Dinsor Road -- is one of the city's more

of Dinsor's eateries date back decades and specialize in classic
Bangkok-style cuisine -- central Thai cooking with palace and Chinese
influences and a distinct emphasis on savory/sweet flavors. Yet Dinsor's
strength is not in street food-style grazing, but rather in its spread of
capable restaurants. Places with time-tested menus that do just about

Thu, 12/08/2011 - 05:00 — Anonymous
Kenneth Howe/
read

India: Unofficially ready for gay travelers
Thu, 12/08/2011 - 04:55 — Anonymous Are gay and lesbian travelers different
from straight ones? Yes and no. They are inquisitive about the same
destinations (for example Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan in India) but are more
sensitive to local culture, food and even religious practices. Besides, based
on mere finances, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) tourism is a
US$65 billion industry in the United States alone. Surveys there suggest that
gays and lesbians are more affluent and travel more, as much as two or three
times a year.read more

And the world's most expensive city for expats is ... Tokyo
Wed, 12/07/2011 - 17:41 — Anonymous No startling news here, but Japanese
cities are still the most expensive places to live in Asia. According to a
survey conducted by ECA International to assess the cost of living for
expats, Tokyo has held onto the top spot for the second year running, despite
the tumultuous events of 2011. In order of priciness, Olso, Geneva, Nagoya,
Zurich, Yokohama, Bern, Stavanger, Basel and Kobe make up the most expensive
cities after Tokyo. Japan's dominance is due to its record high yen, which
has risen by about 20 percent against the U.S. dollar in the past 12

5 signs Myanmar is getting easier for travelers
Wed, 12/07/2011 - 12:05 — Anonymous The reforms that anticipated Secretary
of State Hillary Clinton's recent trip to Myanmar (also known as Burma) --
the first visit by a high-ranking U.S. official in 50 years -- underscore an
apparent desire by the military junta to turn from pariah state into global
participant. Round after round of sanctions in the late 1990s and early 2000s
left Myanmar isolated, transforming it into a vast bucolic playground for the
privileged few who benefited from the land's legion of natural resources
while businesses and banks went bust. read more

Tibet: Asia’s best winter destination?
Wed, 12/07/2011 - 05:00 — Anonymous Since most travelers go to Tibet in the
summer, Lhasa can sometimes appear swamped with tourists lining up at palaces
and monasteries. Winter is actually a better time to visit for many reasons.
The epic train journey from Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou is even more
mind-expanding across a winter wonderland where the sunrise sprinkles golden
light on the snowfields of the Tibetan plateau, and lonesome trucks navigate
the frozen tundra under a milky blue sky. Outside the window of a comfy train
carriage, yak herdsmen, wearing coats with drooping hoods and extended
sleeves, hunker down in bunkers to avoid whipping winds at minus 40 C.read
